Frequently Asked Questions

Choosing to join a Multi Academy Trust is a landmark decision. We believe in transparency and "honest appraisal" at every stage of our dialogue. Below are answers to the questions we are most frequently asked by schools considering joining the TSSMAT family.

School Identity & Autonomy

Will our school lose its unique identity or name?

No. We believe that "no individual character, tradition and heritage will be lost". Our schools are not intended to be clones of the Trust; rather, they are "better versions of themselves". You retain your name, your unique culture, and the heritage that makes your school a pillar of its local community.

How much autonomy will we actually have?

We believe in "supported autonomy". Proven good and outstanding schools retain significant autonomy within a framework set by our Directors. While we expect all schools to embrace our shared vision and "non-negotiables," we work as true partners rather than top-down managers.

Must we adopt the Trust’s curriculum?

While we have a Trust-developed curriculum currently shared by three of our schools, we recognize that "good and outstanding schools can retain their own curriculum". However, we do have a set of core curriculum expectations—such as being broad, balanced, and research-grounded—that all member schools must adhere to.

Staff & Wellbeing

Will my pay and conditions change?

When a school joins TSSMAT, all staff transfer under TUPE (Transfer of Undertakings Protection of Employment) regulations. This is a formal legal process that protects your existing contract arrangements.

What are the benefits for our staff?

TSSMAT is a "people-first" Trust. We provide a CPD guarantee, offering access to bespoke professional development, Early Career Teacher (ECT) induction programmes, and opportunities to lead subjects across the Trust. We also prioritize staff wellbeing, conducting regular audits to ensure a culture of "openness and contentment".

Finance & Operations

How much does it cost to be part of TSSMAT?

We do not believe in a "one size fits all" top-slice. Instead, schools are charged proportionally based on their size and level of need. This typically ranges between 5% and 7% of annual GAG. Most schools find they see a "net financial gain" due to the economies of scale we can achieve on their behalf.

Who pays for the conversion process?

Conversion costs—including legal fees, solicitors, and system upgrades—are typically covered by the academy conversion grant provided by the DfE. We handle much of the "bureaucratic burden" to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible for school leaders.

Governance & Leadership

Will we still have a local governing body?

Yes. All of our schools retain a Local Governing Committee (LGC) that reports to the Trust Board . The Trust Board delegates a specific proportion of its powers and functions to these local committees, ensuring that local voices remain central to school leadership.

What happens if our school is currently in "Requires Improvement"?

If a school joins us in difficult circumstances, we provide "significant support and a collegiate approach". This may involve more prescription of Trust practices initially to help the school reach a level of "self-supporting excellence".
